Lewiston, ME

This trip will focus on the lives and stories of the immigrant and refugee population in Lewistion, ME. Trippers will work with children at the Tree Street Youth Center and speak with Lewiston mayoral candidate, Ben Chin, about the current refugee population of Lewiston and how the above U.S. average presence of refugees plays out in the city. The goal of the trip is to gain a better understanding of the challenges immigrants and refugees face in Maine and the US through relevant and meaningful experiences. This trip is a perfect opportunity to step outside of the Colby bubble and engage with Maine communities. An important part of college is learning about and exploring the state you call home for 4 years. Volunteering over your spring break in Lewiston is a great opportunity to do just that!
New York City, NY

Through partnering with and organization called Break A Difference, we will be working with a Boy's and Girl's club in New York, and you will be doing service in both Newark, NJ and New York City. In Newark, you will be working with after-school programs, day cares, and other educational centers looking for support. In New York City, you will be doing the same kind of educational work, but there is the added possibility of working in food banks and pantries, homeless shelters, or in urban gardens to create more green spaces in the city. It all depends on where we are needed and what kinds of projects the Boy's and Girl's club has for us. There are also scheduled breaks that will allow you to explore both Newark and New York. Meals, transportation, and a place to sleep will be provided for you, and all you will need to bring is bedding and a positive attitude!
Houston, Texas (Break a Difference)

Our work in Houston will be centered around Hurricane Harvey relief. We will be partnering with Break A Difference and working on site with the St. Bernard Projects. You will spend most of your week rebuilding homes, but there is also the possibility to participate in smaller projects such as organizing food or clothing distribution. There will be scheduled breaks that will allow you to explore Houston and the surrounding areas. Meals, transportation, and a place to sleep will be provided for you, and all you will need to bring is bedding and a positive attitude!
Houston, Texas (All Hands)

ASB Houston (All Hands) will focus on disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. This is an inter-faith trip in collaboration with the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life (all are welcome to apply from any or no religious context) focused on learning, community building, and meaningful community service. Participants will come together across religious and moral traditions to learn about issues of social importance, serve in meaningful ways, and connect with community leaders and change agents. We will partner with All Hands - a disaster relief agency with a multiple year commitment to the Houston area. All participants must be above the age of 18. The work will be messy and occasionally physically taxing.
